Ariella Azoulay

Ariella Azoulay (Tel Aviv, 1962) is a writer, exhibition curator, filmmaker, and researcher in photography and visual arts. She is the director of the international research group Photo-Lexic and the Photo-Lab, at the Minerva Humanities Center of Tel Aviv University.

She curated the photographic exhibition "State Act 1967-2007" (2010), in which she criticized the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territory. This political exhibition meant that the Bar-Ilan University in Israel, where it teaches visual culture and contemporary philosophy, did not renew its teaching position. She has been a visiting professor at the Center for Human Rights at the University of Connecticut (United States) and is currently a researcher at the Center for Advanced Studies at Durham University (England). She has experience as a film director and screenwriter (Al dusk, 2005) and as curator of several exhibitions. Having taken place in various courses and conferences and is the author of the books A photographic record of destruction and formation of the state, 1947-1950 (2011), The Civil Contract of Photography (2008) and Once Upon a Time: Photography Following Walter Benjamin ( 2006), among others.
