Costas Lapavitsas

Athens, 1960. Greek economist, professor at the University of London SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) and contributing journalist for the opinion section of the London newspaper The Guardian. His research in economics includes the relationship between finance and development, the structure of financial systems, and the evolution and functioning of the Japanese financial system. He has recently started working on the interaction between market and non-market relations in the financial system.

As a member of Research on Money and Finance (RMF), he led together with different economists of Keynesian tradition and even Marxist, a report that criticized the response of European Union countries to the crisis. The debate then focused on the fiscal and salary adjustments adopted in the countries of the periphery. Now the problems have worsened, as he said then. Among his previous publications, some stand out as Social Foundations of Markets, Money and Credit, and Political Economy of Money and Finance.
