Daniel Dale Johnston (born January 22, 1961 ) is a musician , songwriter and artist . Johnston was the subject of the 2005 documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston. He currently lives in a house adjacent to his parents in Waller , Texas home.

His songs have been described as tormented , are a blend between naive and gloomy . In his first recordings Johnston sings in a high register , but throughout the nineties his voice took on a new character and a completely different tone and style as to register and diction . This change may have been due to the effect of smoking or loss of teeth. His performances often seem hesitant and uncertain. One critic described his recordings as " flashes of lucidity ."
