He studied Art History and Literary Theory in Bonn, Stockholm, Rome, Florence and London. Since 1974 he has served as a professor at the Kunsthistorischen Institut of the University of Stockholm and since 1981 he has held a chair in Art History at the Rheinisch-Westfaelische Technische Hochschule in Aachen.
