Jean Améry

Jean Amery is not the author's real name but a pseudonym, which Hans Mayer choose when following the annexation of Austria by Germany in 1938 decided to emigrate to Belgium.
Jean Amery (or Hans Mayer) was born in 1912 in Vienna, where he studied Philosophy and Letters. Arrested and deported by the Germans, escapes camp Gurs and joined the anti-Nazi resistance in Belgium. In 1943 he was again arrested and interned until 1945 in the concentration camp of Auschwitz. Upon release back to Brussels, where his career as a writer and critic begins working at the same time, on radio and television. In 1978 he committed suicide in the city of Salzburg in Austria.
