Jimmy Liao

Jimmy Liao. He was born in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1958. Bachelor of Fine Arts with a specialization in Design. He worked twelve years in the world of advertising until he decided to dedicate himself to writing and drawing his own stories.

Since the 1998 publication of his first two books, Secrets in the Forest and The Smiling Fish, Jimmy Liao has revolutionized the standards of the picture book. In his work we discover the hidden face of the world: silence, anguish, loneliness and nostalgia. Liao gives voice to an intimate world, to emotions difficult to express, with a poetic and existential tone.

Some of his titles have been adapted to different artistic media: musicals, television series, plays and films. Among them, The Smiling Fish, which won in 2006 the Special Award for Best Animated Short Film at the Berlin International Film Festival. In addition, throughout his career he has received a large number of awards, among which are: two Golden Tripods, the highest award for books awarded in Taiwan; the Versele Prize for Children's and Young Adult Literature from Belgium; the Silver Star of the Peter Pan Award from Sweden and the Best Edited Art Book Award from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of Spain.
