(Bad Wildungen, 1936) is a historian of antiquity. Ph.D. in 1962 from 1971 taught in Classical Philosophy Philips-Universität Marburg, and from 1972, Ancient History at the Technical University of Darmstadt. From 1981 until his retirement he was Professor of Ancient History cash in the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, and on two occasions, Visiting Member at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University
