Stephen A. Mitchell

Stephen A. Mitchell (1946-2000) was one of the most impressive innovators of contemporary psychoanalytic theory and one of the forerunners of the interpersonal perspective in psychoanalysis. He served as a professor and analyst at the William Alanson White Institute in New York and postdoctoral program in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis at the University of New York. Along with Jay Greenberg published in 1983 one of the most important contributions to psychoanalysis Relational, Object Relations in Psychoanalytic Theory. He is also author of Relational Concepts in Pyschoanalysis (1988), Hope and Dread in Psychoanalysis (1993), Influence and Autonomy in Psychoanalysis (1997), Can Love Last? (posthumous, 2002). Margaret J. Black is director of continuing education program of the National Institute of Psychotherapy, New York. It is also a professor at the California Psychoanalytic Institute and is part of the editorial board of Psychoanalytic Dialogues.
