Publishing Alliance was founded in 1966 by a prominent group of intellectuals, in order to quicken and stir the claustrophobic Spanish cultural atmosphere , to promote discussion and disseminate knowledge understood as one of the tools most powerful change for Spanish society times. It was during the last years of the Franco dictatorship , which lasted until late 1975, and then the most prominent authors and literary works only circulated in underground editions or foreign .
One of the creators was José Ortega Spottorno , son of the philosopher José Ortega y Gasset. He, along with some other founders of Alliance , also contributed to the creation, ten years later, the newspaper El Pais .
