The essays collected in this volume make Azoulay's position clear: it is necessary to get rid of the distinction between the aesthetic and the political since "no image can exist outside the aesthetic plane". Therefore, photography should be understood as a mediating event of relationships between people. No one is a spectator, we are all participants in a photographic situation, and the subjects portrayed in a photograph are members of a civic sphere in which they have the right to demand to be seen.
