This novel by the Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821-1881) came to light in 1862 shortly after his forced exile in Siberia. The story he writes is a pure transcript of his life shaken by the powerful classes. However, like his characters, family values, spirituality and Russian orthodoxy, help and alleviate unjust arbitrariness. In their stark realism, the good guys endure all blows with resignation and the bad guys are ruthless without any kind of generosity. Humiliated and Offended was in its first printing a serialized novel, a chronicle of impossible loves and a social drama. It bears a certain thematic and environmental similarity with Poor People and marked Dostoyevsky's return to the literary life of his country.
