The roots of understanding history will be found, according to Kant, by an analogue method, which is to admit in the events of the past a purpose, a purpose similar to that that which prevails in the realm of nature. We must observe history as if there were laws in it, which are not objective, but which order the course of events. Behind these laws, invisible to us, lies a moral foundation: the aspiration to seek the "supreme good". Kant sees man's historical destiny as a task that will be to seek by the way of reason a world order that agrees with the pre-a priori postulates of morality. This teleological conception of the historical process must be consistent with a plan of nature, which in the empirical world can only be a framework within which man continues to behave as a "free and autonomous" being who responds to the principles of his rational will.
