Al combate by Ignacio Jerusalem (1707-1769) is the most substantial piece of secular music known to survive from New Spain. An extended ode or ceremonial cantata in honor of Carlos III, King of Spain, it is written in the galant style for Alto and Bass soloists, chorus, natural horns, natural trumpets, timpani, violins, and basso continuo. Divided into an overture, two solo arias, four recitatives, and two choruses, the work concludes with the regal chorus “Mexicana Minerva” in the style of a minuet. Jerusalem composed Al combate for a poetry competition held at the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico on January 31, 1761.
