Someone wrote an allegory. In it, the Great Recession tells the losers: We sincerely regret your fate, but the laws of the economy are ruthless and you must adapt to them by reducing protections. If you want to get rich, you must first accept a greater precariousness. This is a book on political economy that polemicizes with this false way out of the crisis. In order to achieve social control of it, "the economy of fear" has been installed. This one who has always been a faithful ally of power - adopts unprecedented faces: it is no longer about the traditional fears, which continue to exist, but about the fear of the "other", of the one who comes to dispute the few jobs, of economic insecurity, to an increasingly regressive distribution of wealth and, above all, the fear that our representatives, those we have chosen to help us solve public problems, will not be able to do so because decisions are no longer made in parliaments, but in other remote, dark and impersonal territories. The factual power of markets has multiplied. The cartoonist El Roto has summed it up in a cartoon that said: "We had to scare the population to reassure the markets." Citizens fear that their children will live worse than they do. And the latter believe that the system that does not welcome them normally is failed, corrupt, indifferent and irresponsible. A century later, the debate on the balance between democracy and the market has returned.
