The Prince of Aragon, Don Pedro, whose entourage includes Claudius and Benedict, comes to visit Leonato, governor of Messina, hero's father and Beatriz's uncle. Claudio falls in love with Hero and remembers their marriage. The cheerful and sharp Beatrice, and Benedict, unrepentant and witty bachelor, are incarnate in attacking themselves with their taunts; his friends decide to make them fall in love and compose them in a way that Benedict surprises a conversation in which the prince and Claudius speak of a purported secret love of Beatrice for him, and Beatrice surprises a similar confidence about the love Benedict seems to feed for her in secret. However, Don Pedro's brother, Don Juan, who wants to hurt his brother will enter the scene and for this he hatches a plot that will have very bad consequences in Claudio and Hero.
