The burial of Rodrigo's mortal remains in Cardeña in 1102 and the timely donations made by Dona Jimena to that monastery for the benefit of the soul of her weeping husband gave rise to a legendary tradition, which was to be related, a century later, to the development of a sepulchral cult; it is possible that this cult attracted minstrel who would have recited songs about the exploits of the Cid..., in a legend that has come to this day. In any case, apart from the brief news contained in the Najerense Chronicle (h. 1160), the following existing account of the Cidian facts is found in the Poem of Mio Cid (also known as the Song of Mio Cid), which we provisionally dated between 1201 and 1207.
