This is one of Kant's best-constructed essays. It belongs to the period of maturity of his thought, since it appeared once published the third of Criticisms. In it, on the occasion of the problem of the justification of divine wisdom against what in the world seems unworthy of it, Kant provides a sample of the course that has traveled his entire critical philosophy. He thus argues that the so-called "doctrinal" theodicy, constructed through the theoretical use of reason, fails in his attempts to defend the Creator from evil of a different kind. However, the use of practical sources of knowledge allows the philosopher to propose a novel theodicy, which he calls "authentic".
