The route of this book as a whole has a very smooth, short arguments, aphorisms, poetry pages, documents, appointments replaced by small strokes, a classical linear argument, a sort of poetic rhetoric spirals conceptual progress (as a Mary Noel Lapoujade image used often) ... The wealth of Vermeer's work makes possible the full integration on the one hand, the full spectrum of forms of gaze (from the blindness of the mystical vision) and, second, the plurality of forms of pictorial imagination (perspectival illusion of the symbolic mysticism), coming together at the end of the pearl. Thus the book is revealed as an original, brilliant. Jean-Jacques Wunenburger.
