Born in 1918 in the UK. He taught literature at the University of Hull, was a visiting professor at the University of Rochester in the United States, and professor of English at the University of Leicester. In 1964 he founded the Center for Contemporary Cultural Studies, which was its director until 1969. He has served on numerous public bodies and committees, including the Committee on Youth Services, l Broadcasting Committee and the Arts Council of Great Britain. He was chairman of the Advisory Council for Adult and Continuing Education and Broadcasting Research Unit, and Director of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Among his works are WH Auden and thematic Oxford Encyclopedia (10 vols.). Hoggart was an expert witness at trial by the publication of Lady Chatterley's Lover in the publisher Penguin in 1960.
