An assumption that has rarely been questioned is that the media are fundamental allies of any functional democracy. And, for this to happen, it is necessary that there is a healthy distance between the agents of political power and the media organizations, especially in relation to their informative functions. However, the case of Latin America shows that, despite having, in general, liberal-inspired constitutional frameworks in relation to guarantees of freedom of expression and the press, there are many alternative ways of “capturing” the informative and surveillance of the media and journalism. The closeness between the traditional media elites and the political classes has been a fundamental variable, but not the only one that today defines the forms of capture. Based on theoretical proposals and case studies in various countries, this book presents a discussion on regulation, communication policies and media capture in Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, Argentina and Uruguay. Likewise, the case of Cuba is discussed.
