Adam Kucharski

Associate Professor and member of the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His research uses mathematical and statistical models to understand disease outbreaks and the effects of social behavior and immunity on transmission and control. From 2013 to 2017 he held a Professional Development Award from the Medical Research Council in Biostatistics. Much of his work involves developing new mathematical and statistical approaches to understanding the dynamics of infectious disease outbreaks, and he is particularly interested in how to combine different data sources to discover the transmission dynamics and impact of interventions. This research covers directly transmitted infections such as influenza and Ebola, as well as arboviruses such as dengue and Zika virus. Public participation is also an important part of his work: in addition to organizing events in schools, museums, and festivals, he has worked on several projects linking citizen science with large-scale data collection. He is a TED Fellow and winner of the 2016 Rosalind Franklin Award for Best Conference and the 2012 Wellcome Trust Science Writing Award. He has written for media such as The Observer, Financial Times, Scientific American and New Statesman.
