Ayya Khema was born in Germany, educated in Scotland and China, and later became a US citizen.

She was ordained a Buddhist nun in Sri Lanka in 1979 and in 1982 she established the Women's International Buddhist Center near Colombo. Considered one of the leading Buddhists in Europe, Khema wrote numerous books on meditation and Buddhism, translated into various languages.
