Henri Benjamin Constant de Rebecque, French writer and politician, was born in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1767 and died in Paris in 1830 Born into a family of French Protestants uprooted migrants in Switzerland, received a cosmopolitan education through universities of Oxford, Erlangen and Edinburgh. His dedication to politics began during the French Revolution, when in contact with Madame de Staël and become a strong advocate of liberal ideas.
