Fray Luis de León (1527-1591) is one of our most eminent poets and theologians. Surely he was his dazzling literary talent, and not his translation of the Song of Songs, which awoke the lowest instincts of the university and religious authorities that would take him to jail, insufficient punishment if what they wanted was to silence his voice.
