Hagen Schulze

Hagen Schulze (Tangier , July 31, 1943 ) is a German historian. He is a professor of history at the Free University of Berlin. He specializes in early modern Germany and Europe, particularly in comparative European nationalisms it . Schulze studied medieval history and the early modern age, philosophy and political science at the University of Bonn and the University of Kiel. In 1967 received his doctorate and worked in the following years in the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in Berlin and the Federal Archives in Koblenz. In 1977 he obtained his habilitation with his biography of Otto Braun. Subsequently , it was private tutor and substitute teacher in Kiel and Berlin , until he was appointed full professor of modern history at the Free University of Berlin in 1979.

During 1986-87 Historikerstreit , Schulze defended the views of Ernst Nolte, about the Nazi crimes , including the Holocaust , were a reaction to what was perceived as a " Jewish declaration of war" against Germany , based on the fear of the Nazis to the Soviet Union.

From 2000 to 2006 , Schulze was the director of the German Historical Institute London.
