He studied Romance languages and German literature, philosophy and sociology in Munich, Regensburg, Salamanca, Pavia and Konstanz. He taught at the universities of Bochum and Siegen, and visiting professor at Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Berkeley, Princeton and Barcelona, and at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He teaches literature at Stanford University, where he organized symposia interdisciplinary research: "Writing / Écriture / Schrift", "Beyond dualism epistemological convergences between science and humanities.", "The body of the athlete", "Body / Ethics ". His main areas of work are the stories of French, Italian and Spanish literature, literary theory, media theory and cultural history of the body.
