He was born in Bremen in 1909, studied history and art history. He attended classes Heidegger and his Ph.D. in 1938 in Berlin with Walter Elze. It was an important art critic in German and Swiss newspapers. He is the author of Das Bildnis des Dichters [The portrait of the poet] about the friendship between Paula Modersohn-Becker and Rilke, and a biography of Heinrich Vogeler. He was also editor of the Briefe über Cézanne [Letters on Cézanne] Rilke. In 1968, on the occasion of the Kassel Documenta IV, led to the first meeting with Martin Heidegger Eduardo Chillida.
