Heinrich Zimmer

Heinrich Zimmer (Grefswald, 1890-New York, 1943), considered by some "the most important of our time Indologist 'studied Linguistics and Sanskrit at the University of Berlin, where he graduated in 1913. He taught at the university of his native city until 1924, and later headed the department of Indian Studies at the University of Heidelberg until his expulsion from Germany by the Nazi regime in 1938. He emigrated to England, where he was professor of Balliol College of Oxford University until 1942, when he emigrated to New York, was invited to teach philosophy at Columbia University. He is the author, among other works, of Kunstform und Yoga im Indischen Kultbild and Maya: Der Indische Mythos.
