Dajian Huineng (大 鑒 惠 能; pinyin: Dàjiàn Huìnéng; Japanese: Daikan Enō; in Korean: Hyeneung; 638-713), sixth and last patriarch of Zen, was one of the most influential monks of the Chinese Chan School and Zen in general. It is said that he defended the direct and spontaneous approach to the practice of Buddhism and enlightenment, and is considered to have founded the School of Sudden Enlightenment within Zen Buddhism. Modern studies have cast doubt on the authenticity of his traditional biographies and other writings on him.
