Jean Guitton was born in Saint-Étienne (France) in 1901. Writer and philosopher, he was elected to the French Academy in 1961. In 1987 he became part of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences. Close friend of Monsignor Montini (future Pope Paul VI), he was the only lay person authorized by Pope John XXIII to attend the sessions of the Second Vatican Council. He died in Paris in 1999.
