John Donne (1572- March 31, 1631) was the most important English metaphysical poet of the times of Queen Elizabeth I (Elizabeth I) (1559-1603), King James I (James I) (1603-1625) and his son Charles I (Charles I) (1625-1642). Metaphysical poetry is roughly equivalent to the conceptualist poetry of the Spanish Golden Age from which it is contemporary.
