He was born in England. He received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Cambridge. He was a researcher at St. John's College, Oxford and Stanford University, where he taught until 1996 Back in England, he was professor of philosophy at the University of London. Currently he is a researcher at the University of Exeter, where he teaches philosophy of science. Since 2002 he is director of Egenis, Study Center for Genomics and Society, dedicated to the study of meaning and social implications of contemporary genomics.
