Leslie Stephen (London, 1832-1904), father of the famous writer Virginia Woolf, was one of the most eminent figures in Victorian England. Among her many works on political thought and literature, History of English Thought in the Eighteenth especially stand out Century (1876), The Science of Ethics (1882) and his contribution to the monumental Dictionary of National Biography (1885-1891).
In addition, he was editor of the Alpine Journal, co-founded the Alpine Club and was one of the first to crown, during the golden age of mountaineering, all the high peaks of the Alps.
