Luis Suárez Fernández

Luis Suárez Fernández (June 25, 1924) studied Philosophy and Letters at the Universities of Oviedo and Valladolid, and received his Doctorate in History on June 16, 1947 from the University of Madrid. In 1955 he obtained the chair of Prehistory and Universal History of the Ancient and Middle Ages and General History of Culture in Valladolid, becomes dean (1963) and rector (1965-1972), and as such founded the first university chair of Cinema. In 1973 he attended the chair of Medieval History of the newly opened Autonomous University of Madrid, while directing (between 1975 and 1978) the Spanish School of History and Archaeology in Rome of the CSIC (he was already section head of the CSIC School of Medieval Studies since 1956).

Suárez was one of the few historians to initially investigate in the personal file deposited at the Francisco Franco Foundation, which allowed him to publish in 1984 Francisco Franco and his time, an extensive work in eight volumes.

In 1994 he entered the Royal Academy of History with a speech entitled "Spanish Monarchy and Transtamara Revolution". It was answered by Juan Pérez de Tudela y Bueso. In 2001 she received the National History Award for her work Isabel I, Queen.
