Married Manuel Velarde is a linguist, born in Don Benito (Badajoz) on 4 December 1948. He is professor of Spanish Language at the University of Navarra. Degree and PhD in Modern Philology at the University of Seville, has taught at the universities of Seville, Autonomous University of Barcelona and University of La Coruna. It is academic of the Royal Spanish Academy.

His current research interests focus on discourse analysis and text linguistics, as well as the influence of the metalanguage of speech in the lexical creations of the Spanish language (deautonimia: delocutivos, decitativos). Since 2010 is leading the research group GRADUN (Discourse Analysis Group University of Navarra).

He has been named favorite son of the city of Don Benito (2005).
