Philosopher of science, has dealt with the philosophy of biology, and has paid special attention to the debate between creationism and evolutionary biology. A prolific author, he has published several books and articles in prestigious academic publishers. He founded the famous journal Biology and Philosophy. Ruse received his BA in mathematics from the University of Bristol in 1962 and then a Master of Philosophy in Ontario and a doctorate in philosophy also, again in Bristol in 1970 For 35 years, taught at the University of Guelph in Canada and then at the University of Florida, where it is, since 2000, Lucyle T. Werkmeister Professor of Philosophy and, since 2004, director of the Program in History and Philosophy of Science. In 1986 he was elected to the Royal Society of Canada and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has received honorary doctorates at universities in Norway and Canada. Michael Ruse has been an expert witness for the Union of American Civil Liberties in the creationist view of Arkansas in 1981 (McLean against Arkansas), which contributed to the constitutionality of the state law allowing the teaching of "science fail of creation "in the school system of that state.
