Pat Southern (Altrincham, UK, 1948), specialist in the history of Rome, studied Archaeology and Ancient History at the universities of London and Newcastle upon Tyne. He was for many years librarian of the University of Newcastle. He has written over a dozen books, especially dedicated to the Roman army and prominent figures in classical Rome, among them The Late Roman Army (1996), Domitian: Tragic Tyrant (1997), Augusto (2001), Julius Caesar (2001), The Roman Army: A Social and Institutional History (2007) and Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire (2009).
