He was born in 1914. Protestant theologian, a disciple of Rudolf Bultmann and exegetes teacher, was professor of New Testament at the University of Bonn and one of the foremost authorities in the field of critical analysis of the Gospels. He died in 1977.

His masterpiece is the history of the early Christian literature.
