Rafael García Mahíques

Rafael García Mahíques is a tenured professor of Art History at the Universitat de València. He began his career in iconographic studies on Emblematics, distinguishing himself in methodological reflection, applying the principles of iconology to the study of this Baroque cultural phenomenon. In this line, it is worth highlighting among other studies: Empresas Sacras de Núñez de Cepeda (1988); Emblematic flora: descriptive approach of the iconic code (doctoral thesis-1991); as well as Empresas Morales de Juan de Borja (1998). He is also the author of different studies on other areas of iconography, such as The Adoration of the Magi. Image of the Epiphany in the art of Antiquity (1992). He is currently President of the Spanish Emblematic Society, which includes prestigious university professors from Art History, Philology and Classical Studies. Among its lines of research, it also includes assistance in the Conservation and Restoration of artistic heritage, forming part of the project Comprehensive Recovery of the Basilica of the Virgen de los Desamparados in Valencia, carried out by the Polytechnic University of Valencia. He heads the APES Research Group.
