He holds a PhD in sociology from the University of Studies of Turin. Since 1989 he is full-time researcher at the Institute for Social Research at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (IISUNAM).

He is a member of the Mexican Academy of Science and the National System of Researchers (Level II). He has worked on issues social organizations, socio-political modernization and cohesion and social capital. He has coordinated two books and published as an author other three.

The latest two being social complexity and new order in Mexican society and Preliminary analysis of social cohesion. A comparative study. He is the author of over thirty articles in scientific journals or anthologies
