British historian, he is a professor in the Graduate Faculty of the New School University of New York and in the Department of Sociology of the University of Essex. Former editor of the prestigious New Left Review, he continues to publish and collaborate actively in the magazine since 1962. Among his most famous works are his studies on colonial slavery, with "The Overthrow of Colonial Slavery" (1988) and "The Making of New World Slavery: from the Baroque to the Modern, 1492-1800 "(1997), as well as" Banking on Death - Or, Investing in Life "(2002) in which he addresses the issue of pension privatization.
