Shizuteru Ueda (Tokyo, 1926) studied philosophy at Kyoto University and his Ph.D. from the University of Marburg (Germany) with a thesis on the Master. On his return to Japan, he taught at the University of Kyoto, where he held the chair of Philosophy of Religion from 1977 until his retirement in 1989. Since then continues to teach in the same Kyoto University and the University of Hanazono and has intensified its contacts with Europe, where he has been a visiting professor and lectured at universities such as Marburg, Basel, Bonn, Düsseldorf, Tübingen, Munich , Vienna and Zurich. He has also participated in the annual Eranos circle in Ascona (Switzerland).
