Brazil, 1936. He is a narrator, poet, essayist and cultural critic. Although he received his doctorate in French Literature (the Sorbonne, 1968), his works also travel through the fields of history and anthropology. His fiction texts include: Em libertade (1981), Stella Manhattan (1985), Uma história de família (1992), Keith Jarrett no blue note: improvisos de jazz (1996), Viagem ao México (1995), Mil Rosas Roubadas (2014), Machado (2016), among others. His essays on literary and cultural criticism have been collected in several collections: Uma literatura nos trópicos (1978), Vale quanto pesa (1982), Nas malhas da letra (2002), O cosmopolitanismo do pobre (2004), Ora (direis), puxar conversa! (2006) and As raízes e o labirinto da América Latina (2006) and Genealogia da Ferocidade (2017). He was also editor of the magazine Margens/Márgenes and coordinator of Derrida's Glossário (1976). Other of his relevant works are the edition and preface to the anthology Intérpretes do Brazil (3 vols.) (2000), as well as the preface and notes to the correspondence of Carlos Drumond de Andrade, in Carlos & Mario (2002). Ediciones mimesis has published the Spanish translation of Genealogy of Ferocity (2018).
