Udo Kultermann

Udo Kultermann (Stettin, 1927-New York, 2013) was born in Germany, where he studied Art History, Archeology and German Literature at the University of Greifswald. In 1953 he received his doctorate from the University of Munster and from 1959 he was director of the Morsbroich Museum in Leverkusen. In the sixties he moved to the United States and began his professional relationship with the Washington University in Saint Louis, of which in 1986 he was appointed Ruth and Norman Moore Professor and in which, since 1994, he was Professor Emeritus. His research and teaching work focused on 20th century architecture, although he also devoted a significant part of his time to various issues of a historical-artistic nature. His works include, in addition to "History of Art History" (1987), which has numerous translations, "Art and Life: The Function of Intermedia" (1971), "Contemporary Architecture in Eastern Europe" (1989) and "Thirty Years After: The Future of the Past" (2002).
