American travel writer of English, Irish and Native American descent from the Osage Nation. He is the author of several books on Indian travel throughout the United States. Her nickname Least Heat-Moon came from his father: “My name is Heat Moon, your older brother is Little Heat Moon. You, when arriving last, are less [Least] ». Heat-Moon attended the University of Missouri, where he earned his BA, MA, and Ph.D. in English, as well as a BA in Photojournalism. He also worked as an English teacher at the university. He is also the author of PrairyErth (1991), an in-depth study of the history and people of Chase County, Kansas; River-Horse (1999), in which he describes a four-month boat trip, in which he sailed almost exclusively on the US waterways from the Atlantic to the Pacific; and from the books Columbus in the Americas (2002), Roads to Quoz (2008) and Here, There, Elsewhere (2013); as well as his first fictional novel, Celestial Mechanics (2017). In 2014 he published Writing "Blue Highways", an account of how he wrote his most successful book, Blue Highways (1982). Reflecting on the journey, he also discusses writing, publishing, personal relationships, and many other aspects of writing the book. For this work he was awarded the Missouri Council on the Humanities Award for Outstanding Literary Achievement.
