The fable of Love and Psyche is one of the most beautiful and significant myths of classical antiquity, as well as one of the greatest influences on literature and the arts, not only during the Greco-Roman era but also throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and even until the eighteenth century. A good proof that it has not yet fallen is the adaptation of the English writer C. S. Lewis in the middle of the last century, having matured throughout his life. The only complete version of this mythological history is inserted in the middle of the varied plot of stories that make up the novel of Apuleius The Golden Ass, written in Carthage in the second century AD. Tragic and obscene, mystical and mocking, this work retains all the characteristics of Latin imperial literature, not forgetting the Alexandrian spiritual essence of which she is also heiress. In his long and erudite epilogue, Antonio Betancor exhaustively reviews all the facets of this myth: from the abstruse pyrotechnics of mythographers and grammarians of antiquity to the vibrant Neoplatonic visions that reach Ficino; from the different Jungian psychological interpretations to the most recent literary studies on the cultural context in which it arose.
