The most famous of the legendary outlaws came to modern times thanks to the ballads, which would be imitated and increased over the centuries, before Robin Hood became the fictional or cinematographic figure we know today. The true entity of the character and his environment can only be discovered in those ballads, which are a hymn to life in nature, to adventure, and to a primal sense of society and justice. Along with more mythical or timeless meanings, ballads recover the historical flavor of the times in which they were created, and their evolution testifies to important ideological changes. From an aesthetic point of view, they introduce us to popular medieval literature of oral tradition, of which they are very illustrative specimens.
