Although the Dictionary of the Bible A. van den Born, H. Haag and S. of Ausejo (Herder, Barcelona 1963, 9 ed., 1987) remains an unparalleled tool of its kind, it was essential to a comprehensive review to take into account research, discoveries and new questions posed to the Bible during the last quarter century. Herder now offers readers the opportunity to get their hands on the outcome of this task of revision, which for three years has remained in suspense to a team from the "Center Computer and Bible" Maredsous, under the auspices of a committee of six peer reviewers and about 111 employees, from all walks of French and international exegesis. Computing resources have allowed to compare and then integrated into the entire Dictionary about 13 000 references. Other automated controls have referred to the consistency of referrals and subdivisions of more than 4000 entries that make up the work. The system adopted for the transcription of the biblical languages meets scientific standards for use in this field: to minimize the possible ambiguities, each sign of the starting alphabets usually transcribed through a single sign, always the same. The completeness of the entries is one of the main demands that the reader has the right to raise such an encyclopedic work. Here too, progress has been made. Specifically, the Dictionary contains entries for: All the books of the Bible. · All names and populations that are cited in it. · All the OT (except for some that only appear in lists) and NT (except for some names that appear in the genealogies of Jesus). · The set of animals, plants and minerals of the biblical world and its derivatives. · Objects of everyday life. · The political institutions and social structures and professional communities and the States mentioned in the Bible. · The biblical languages. · The major concepts telogía and anthropology. · The religion of Israel and the neighboring towns (deities, institutions, forms of worship, etc..) · The language of biblical criticism. The geopolitical and cultural context of the Bible, with the recent findings of Archaeology. Moreover this dictionary looks at the history, polymorphous and always living in the communities that have spun their existence around the Bible. Thus, the reader will find extensive summary on the following topics: apocryphal versions of ancient, medieval and modern Bible; modalities of their transmission and diffusion, from the origins to today, impregnation biblical Judaism, the various Christian denominations and Islam, dialogue with the arts, literature and thought, diversity and complementarity of religious readings or areligious, etc.. Faced with the original French edition Spanish edition offers some important particulars the reader should know: · It contains more information because it incorporates the 400 entries in the original edition are version exclusive telematics. · The selection of the spelling of proper names and terminalogía not followed any particular Spanish version of the biblical texts, although some preference is given to the options Bible Herder. · The literature has been enriched with an indication of the works translated into Castilian and in a few cases, with the addition of Castilian original titles not listed in the French edition.
