The thought assumes certain challenges in each era and nihilism is a real challenge for our time. What is nihilism? What are the hallmarks of that "ghost that runs the world today"? The present essay intends to delve into these questions and approach them from a perspective committed to metaphysics. Therefore, it also takes care of other issues that concern the latter, its nature and its relevance. Is metaphysics still possible? How does metaphysics deal with those Faustian powers that always say "no"? What can today oppose philosophical reflection to the challenge of nihilism? On a road that has as travel companions Socrates, Spinoza, Schopenhauer, Heidegger and, especially, Nietzsche, this book tries to answer the previous questions. And he considers that piety, in the Latin sense of the term "pietas," could be a good antidote to nihilism. A piety that is not only solidarity and compassion, but also respect, recognition and gratitude. And, above all, a piety that has humor as an ally, because, as Zarathustra says, "by learning to be happier, it is better to forget to hurt others and to imagine damage".
