B. Ruby Rich named a new genre, the New Queer Cinema (NQC), in a groundbreaking article in the Village Voice in 1992. This movement in film and video was intensely political and aesthetically groundbreaking, made possible by the debut of the camcorder and fueled initially out of outrage over the uncontrolled spread of HIV-AIDS. The genre has grown to include a generation of Queer artists, filmmakers, and activists. As a critic, curator, journalist, and scholar, Rich has been inextricably linked to New Queer Cinema since its inception. This volume brings together the best of her writing on the NQC and presents her new thoughts on the subject. Following this motion picture movement from its origins in the mid-1980s to the present, Rich presents his thoughts on NQC pioneers including Derek Jarman and Isaac Julien - research such famous films as Go Fish, Brokeback Mountain, Itty Bitty Titty Committee and Milk; she explores lesser known films and international cinemas; and she documents the most recent incarnations of the NQC on screen, on the web, and in art galleries.
